Un nouveau Neil Young ? Pas exactement. Comme un symbole, pour son 45e disque, Le Loner réinterprète ses morceaux, en puisant dans son (très) large catalogue, de ses débuts dans les années 60 à son dernier disque. Produit en duo avec Lou Adler, Before and After ouvre un nouvel espace-temps de 48 minutes continues, en treize pistes jouées à l’acoustique. “Des chansons de ma vie, récemment enregistrées, créent un montage musical sans début ni fin”, éclaire-t-il. Seul avec sa guitare et son harmonica la plupart du temps, au piano et à l'orgue pour les plus fidèles Birds et My Heart, le songwriter canadien joue l’ensemble dans une économie intimiste. "Le sentiment est capturé, non pas en morceaux mais comme un tout – conçu pour être écouté ainsi. Sa présentation défie le mode aléatoire, l'organisation numérique, la séparation. Se réserve à l'écoute seulement. Tout est dit.”De I’m the Ocean sorti sur Mirror Ball (1995) dans lequel Neil Young se frottait au grunge en invitant les musiciens de Pearl Jam, jusqu’à la pop-folk de Don’t Forget Love sur le récent Barn en 2021, en passant par le dansant If You Got Love que l'on pouvait écouter dans des versions non officielles, l’inédit Homefires qui sortait dans le coffret Archives Volume 2: 1972–1976 publié en 2020 ou encore son premier titre Burned avec Buffalo Springfield en 1966, les versions diffèrent des originales pour aller droit à l’essentiel et former une pièce unique.
