The Saints’ Corner
We would like to thank Jody Barnes for her many years of dedicated service as the Pastoral Council Facilitator. Please pray for her and her family as she focuses her time on their wellbeing. God bless you. We would also like to thank Patti Schwartz for her tire-less service as our Faith Formation Director. Patti and her husband will be relocating to Florida in the fall. Finally, we would like to wish our Reigniting the Faith Campaign Director, Kim Peabody, and her family the best as they also relocate to Florida. Kim’s colleague, Sebastian will be assuming the duties of Campaign Director.
As we journey through the Liturgical year, we celebrate both major,
solemn feast days and regular feast days of great, heroic saints in the
Catholic Church. Learning about their lives can inspire us to grow in
holiness and build relationships with our 16,000+ brothers and sisters,
canonized by the Church, who have set wonderful exam-
ples for us of lives lived in perfect harmony with God.
St. Bernard, Doctor of the Church (Feast Day August 20; patron of candle makers) St. Bernard was born of wealthy parents, but called to the priesthood at 22. He was characterized by his wisdom and fervor. He authored Apologia, among other works,
and founded several Cistercian monasteries. He had a knack for getting the job done. What a great saint to petition when we have a long list of things to do and it will take a miracle to complete them!
St. Bernard, pray for us. St. Rose de Lima (Feast Day August 23; patroness of Latin America, the Philippines, florists and gardeners). St. Rose’s really wanted to be a nun, but her parents needed her help to support the family. She was very beautiful, inside and out. St. Rose sold flowers and did sewing and needlepoint to earn a living. She built a small shanty to live in, took a vow of chastity and be-came a Third Order Dominican. As the need arose, she also took in orphans and the homeless, to care for their needs. She was renowned for her love for God and all people, so she’s a great saint to turn to for help learning to be merciful and love others. St. Rose, pray for us.

There will be a 45 minute discussion, begin-ning approximately ten minutes after Mass this Sunday, Aug. 19 and on Aug. 26. Light refreshments provided.

Sometimes people stop by the office to ask me, “What’s the **Miscellaneous mean?” That’s a great question! :0) Sometimes people can’t make it to Mass at St. Joseph Church - perhaps due to infirmity, a family vacation, recovering from surgery - lots of reasons, really - so they mail in their envelopes or have a friend drop them off with me at the office during the week. Miscellane-ous means offertory donations that didn’t come in the collection basket on the weekend, but came that week by other means. Thank you for your support. ~Sandi DiNicola

THE REV. FRANCIS A KELLEY SOCIETY OF ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ANNOUNCING A NEW SOCIETY AT ST. JOSEPH
Join us in celebrating a new society at St. Joseph, the Rev. F. A. Kelley society. Our society honors and helps all veterans in our Capital district. We honor these ordinary hometown heroes, just as our Predecessors honored their veterans, as exhibited in the Vestibule of our magnificent Church. Rev. Kelley was a Cohoes native, ordained in the Albany Diocese Dec. 1912, served at St. Marys’ church on 3rd St Troy and volunteered as an Army Chaplain. He became Division Chaplain of the 27th Allied Expeditionary Force in WWI at the request of the commanding general, Gen. O’Ryan. Fr. Kelley was awarded our nation’s second highest combat honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, for acts of bravery on the battlefield during repeated assaults on the Hindenburg line. Fr. Kelley also received the British Military Cross and the French Croix de Guerre. Rev. Kelley was a moving force behind what we now know as the Veterans Administration and the American Legion. He was the American Legions first National Chaplain. Fr. Kelley was selected to conduct the Catholic Ritual at the burying ceremony of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington VA. Nov, 1921. Upon his return home in April of 1919, Fr. Kelley remained active in his community. A very popular National Hero of WWI, He founded Sacred Heart Parish in Gloversville, worked hard for veteran’s benefits and care, eventually serving as Pastor of Sacred Heart church in Cairo NY, where he died, Oct. 1931 succumbing to lung disease precipitated by having been gassed during the War 3 or more times. Rev. Kelley is counted among our Rensselaer County Hall of Heroes. He is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Troy. Our society honors Rev. Kelley by emulating him in respecting the name of Jesus, helping Veterans with everyday tasks such as Veterans Administration paperwork, finances, healthcare and routine home care and maintenance. We also help individuals locate documents and awards related to their War Service. …More next week on our Society’s work and how you can participate. In the Vestibule of Church today are two Medal display boxes also called ‘Shadow Boxes,’ which we help prepare for veterans. Peter Matthew Guenette (January 4, 1948 – May 18, 1968) was a United States Army soldier from Troy NY and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in the Vietnam War.
AND Joseph Sidoti, M.D. Capt. of the 11th Airborne Division, Pacific Theater of operations Captain Sidoti was a native of Richmond County NY, and a graduate from Medical School in Bologna, Italy who served with the 11th Airborne Div. in WWII. His division liberated POW’s imprisoned in Japanese torture camps, and he attended Gen’l MacArthur on his mission into Japan. He is the late Father of our Pastor and Chaplain, Rev. James R Sidoti, O.Carm.
