The collection of bunnies came in all kinds of shapes and sizes, some fuzzy, some with lop ears, and bunnies with accessories or clothes. You will add features to the body, face, and ears along with the bunny body. The inner ears, nose, heart, and tail are perfect for pulling out some scrap fabric from your stash.
Love Bunny Sewing Pattern Comes in Three Sizes
- The small size is 11″ tall by 7″ wide. The medium size (my favorite size) is 19″ tall by 12″ wide. The largest size is 29″ tall by 21″ wide, a little bigger than a standard pillow size.
- The instructions for all three sewing pattern sizes are the same, just with different measurements throughout.
Fabric Recommendations for the Love Bunny Sewing Pattern
The Love Bunny pattern is written for fleece fabric (like many of my plush sewing patterns). However, other fabrics can work great for the bunny.
Here are some fabric recommendations for plush toys made with Scratch and Stitch sewing patterns:
Fleeceis my go-to fabric for plush toys using Scratch and Stitch plushie patterns. Fleece has a slight stretch, making it great for stuffing to give stuffed animals squeezable, plump bodies. Fleece is great for cutting, pinning, and sewing, all essential considerations when choosing fabrics for sewing projects. Sewing fleece on a machine may take a few adjustments (like lowering the foot pressure and increasing the stitch length), but after a few tests with fleece fabrics, you will be confidently sewing stuffed animals with fleece fabric.
Feltis another great fabric for making my plush sewing patterns (especially the,Valentine Monsters, and of course the Felt Chain Snake). One primary consideration with felt fabric is that it does not stretch. Over time and use, the felt will soften, and plush toys may look a little more plump than when they were first made. Felt is an excellent choice for smaller versions of plush toys and also for sewing by hand.
Quilting cottoncan be used for making plush toys. It is not my first choice in making stuffed animals, as the edges will fray. This fraying can be solved by serging or overlocking the edges of the pattern pieces. You can also add lightweight interfacing to quilting cotton fabrics for making stuffed animals that will slow down some fraying. Quilting cotton is great for features on stuffed animals like theEaster Egg Plush.
Upcycled textilesare not only a great way to get a second life out of some old clothing, blankets, or towels, but these can also be used to make plush toys. Many Scratch and Stitch plush patterns have been made with upcycled clothing like denim jeans, sweatshirts, and corduroy pants. These upcycled textiles are also perfect for making “memory bears.” The blue Love Bunny pictured here is made using an old fleece blanket, and the texture from many washings is just right.

The Love Bunny can be Sewn By Hand or Machine
The Love Bunny (and all other Scratch and Stitch plush patterns) can be sewn by hand, on a sewing machine, or a combination of both. Most stuffed animal patterns require hand sewing to finalize closing up the opening with a ladder stitch. If the stuffed animal is being made with all raw edges exposed, the opening can be closed using a sewing machine. Hand-sewing plush toys is a great way to add details to make each handmade plush toy unique. Adding a blanket stitch with embroidery thread around the perimeter or to the features adds a nice finishing touch to handmade stuffed animals. TheFelt Chain Snakerequires some hand stitching to complete the pattern.
How do you prefer to sew your stuffed animal patterns?
Adding the Love Bunny Eyes and Mouth
The Love Bunny plush sewing pattern is written with some hand-stitched facial features using embroidery thread. Even if you’re unfamiliar with embroidery thread stitches, you will gain some experience with the basic embroidery stitches used in the pattern. The eyes and mouth line use a Stem Stitch, and the vertical line between the nose and mouth uses a Split Stitch.
Alternatives to embroidery thread that I’ve seen others using when making the Scratch and Stitch plush patterns are buttons for eyes, using an embroidery machine for the face features, small fabric scraps, or even fabric markers.
While adding the eyes and mouth with embroidery thread is my go-to option for a long-lasting face, there are many other options.
Stuffing the Love Bunny
The Love Bunny (along with all of my stuffed animal sewing patterns) can be stuffed with various options. My most-used way to stuff my plush patterns is using Poly-fil‘s fiber filling. This filling creates a nice, plump, soft stuffed animal without lumps. The polyester fiber filling is also machine washable, making it a popular option for kids’ plushies.
No-waste alternatives to fiber filling are fabric scraps cut up into small pieces or pulling the stuffing from an old pillow. Many people tell me that they will add pellets for weight or a lavender sachet to their plush sewing patterns for a relaxing, scented stuffed animal.
